In 2018 DVLA will hold 5 Traditional and 4 Timed Auctions of DVLA Personalised Registrations.

The next DVLA auction is at Oulton Hall, Rothwell Lane, Oulton, Leeds, LS26 8HN on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd February 2018 and the highest price paid for a Private Plate at a DVLA auction, is in excess, of half a million pound (including fees).

If the person with the right to use the private number dies

The person in charge of the will (the executor) or person who has been left the number in the will (the beneficiary) can ask to either:

• give up the right to use the private number (you can apply for a refund)
• keep the private number, transfer it to another vehicle or put it in someone else’s name

Give up the right to use the private number

If the person has left you a V778 retention document or V750 certificate of entitlement then you can apply for a refund. You’ll need to tick either:

• section 5 on the V750
• section 4 on the V778

Send your completed form to DVLA.

Keep or transfer the private number

You’ll need to fill in the application to transfer or retain (V317) if you want to:

• keep the vehicle registration number
• give the number to someone else
• transfer the number to another vehicle

Send the form with the log book (V5C) to DVLA, along with a death certificate or one of the following:

• a copy of the probate
• a copy of the will
• a letter explaining that the previous nominee has died
• letters of administration
• a signed confirmation of executor or next of kin by a solicitor

There’s an £80 fee.

1.    Give a private number to someone else

You can put your private number on someone else’s vehicle either online or by post. Once it’s on there, they have the option to take the number off.

Online

Assign your private number to someone else’s vehicle. You’ll need to enter details from that vehicles log book (V5C).

DVLA will send a replacement log book for the vehicle, but with the new private number assigned to it.

By post

Fill in section 2 of your V778 or V750, and post it to DVLA along with the log book (V5C) for the vehicle you want to put the private number on. The address is on the form.

If the nominee dies

The person who has the right to use the private number can change the nominee by sending a letter and the V750 or V778 to DVLA Personalised Registrations.

2.    Change your name and address

You can change the name and address on your V750 or V778 by post. You can also change the address on your V750 online.

Use your DVLA personalised registration account.

Change your name and address by post

You need to return the V750 or V778 with a letter saying what the new name or address is.

Send them back to DVLA Personalised Registrations.

If you don’t have the V750 or V778 you’ll need to send a signed letter with proof of your name or address.

For a change to your address, send a copy of a:

• household bill sent to you in the last 3 months
• Council Tax bill for this year
• bank or building society statement sent to you in the last 3 months
• medical card

For a change to your name, send a copy of you:

• current British driving licence
• EU passport
• birth certificate
• marriage certificate
• decree nisi or decree absolute

Fix mistakes

You need to return the V750 or V778 with a letter saying what the mistakes are.

Send them back to DVLA Personalised Registrations (the address is written on the back of the V750 and V778).

1.    Take a private number off a vehicle

You can take a private (personalised) number off a car if you either:

• don’t want to use it right now
• want to assign it (put it on) to another vehicle

Eligibility

You must be the registered keeper and have the vehicle’s log book (V5C).

The vehicle must be:

• registered with DVLA in the UK
• available for inspection
• of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate
• either taxed or a SORN must have been in place

You can’t keep a number starting with Q or NIQ.

How to take off a number

You can take off a private number online or by post. It costs £80. If you don’t assign the number within 6 years, you can apply for a refund.

You can’t use the online service if the vehicle isn’t in your name, you have to apply by post.

What happens to the vehicle

The vehicle will get a new number assigned to it straight away if you do it online, it takes longer by post.

You’ll need to get new number plates made.

What happens to the number

You’ll get a V778 document that proves you still have the right to use the number for the next 10 years. You must renew your right to use a private number before it expires.

If you’ve taken the number off a vehicle online, you can assign it to another vehicle straight away – use the reference number you get at the end.

2.    Renew your private number

You must renew your right to use your private (personalised) number every 10 years if it’s not being used on a vehicle. If you got your private number before 2015, you must renew it more often – check your V750 or V778 document.

You must renew your right to use a private number before it expires.

You’ll get a reminder letter or email if you’re not using a private number and your right to use it is about to run out.

You can renew it for up to 10 years, and it doesn’t cost anything to do.

Renew your V750 online

You can renew your V750 by creating a DVLA personalised registration account or by using your existing account.

Renew by post

Fill in the form on the V750 or V778.

Send the V750 or V778 to the address on the form.

Replace a lost or stolen V750 or V778

You can send a letter to ask for a replacement if you’re the person with the right to use the number (the grantee). If you’re the grantee your name will be on the V778 or V750.

It’ll take around 3 to 4 weeks for the new V750 or V778 to arrive.

Buying at DVLA auctions

There are auctions across the country about 6 times a year. You can see a list of the numbers coming up for auction.

You can bid in person, by phone, in writing or online.

You’ll get a V750 certificate of entitlement once you’ve paid for the private (personalised) number. This is to prove that you have the right to use a private number plate.

Buying from a private dealer or person

You can buy a private number from a dealer or from another person.

Make sure you get a V750 or V778 document from the seller to prove you have the right to use the number. You’ll need it to assign the number to a vehicle.

To assign a private (personalised) number to a vehicle, you need either a:

You must not sell or get rid of a vehicle until you get the new log book (V5C).

1. Overview

You can buy a private (personalised) number plate for your vehicle from DVLA or from a private dealer.

Take a private number off (retention)

If you don’t want to use your private number anymore you can apply to take it off your vehicle, You can hold on to it until you want to use it again in the future – this is sometimes called putting it on retention.

You’ll get a V778 certificate proving you still have the right to use the number.

Selling a private number

You can also sell your private number if you don’t want to use it anymore.

If you’re selling your private number online, don’t share a scan or photograph of the V750 or V778 certificate. Someone other than the buyer might use it to put the private number on another vehicle.

Assign (put on) a private number to a vehicle

If you have the right to a private number that isn’t currently being used, you can apply to assign it to a vehicle.

Transfer a number from one vehicle to another

To transfer a private number from one vehicle to another, you need to:

1. Take it off the vehicle you’re transferring it from.
2. Assign it to the vehicle you’re transferring it to.

You can also do this by post using form V317.

You’ll need a debit or credit card to use this service.

Personalised registration numbers can only be used on a vehicle registered (or about to be registered), taxed and used in the UK.

You can’t make the vehicle look newer than it actually is. For example, you can’t put a registration number onto a 2003 registered vehicle.

When you buy a personalised registration number, you’re buying the right to assign this number to a vehicle registered in your name or someone else’s name (the nominee).

4. Flags, symbols and identifiers

Flags and national identifying letters

You can display one of the following flags with identifying letters on the left-hand side of the number plate:

• Union Flag
• Cross of St George
• Cross of St Andrew – also known as the Saltire
• Red Dragon of Wales

The letters, or national identifiers, you can have are:

• GREAT BRITAIN, Great Britain or GB
• UNITED KINGDOM, United Kingdom or UK
• CYMRU, Cymru, CYM or Cym
• ENGLAND, England, ENG, Eng
• SCOTLAND, Scotland, SCO or Sco
• WALES or Wales

You’ll still need a GB sticker when travelling in Europe if you display one of these national flags and identifiers.

The flag must be above the identifier. You can’t have the flag or letters on the number plate margin, and neither can be more than 50 millimetres wide.

Euro symbol

If you display the Euro symbol and Great Britain (GB) national identifier on your number plate, then you won’t need a separate GB sticker when travelling within the European Union.

The Euro symbol must:

• be a minimum height of 98mm
• have a width between 40 and 50mm
• have a reflective blue background with 12 reflecting yellow stars at the top
• show the member state (GB) in reflecting white or yellow

You’ll need a debit or credit card to use this service.

Personalised registration numbers can only be used on a vehicle registered (or about to be registered), taxed and used in the UK.

You can’t make the vehicle look newer than it actually is. For example, you can’t put an registration number onto a 2003 registered vehicle.

When you buy a personalised registration number, you’re buying the right to assign this number to a vehicle registered in your name or someone else’s name (the nominee).

2.Rules for number plates

Your number plates should:

• be made from a reflective material
• display black characters on a white background (front plate)
• display black characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
• not have a background pattern

Characters on a number plate can be 3D.

If you ride a motorbike or motor tricycle

Motorcycles and motor tricycles registered on or after 1 September 2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle.

If you ride a motorbike or motor tricycle registered before 1 September 2001 you can also display a number plate at the front, but you don’t have to.

Motorcycle and motor tricycle number plate numbers should be on 2 lines.

Towing a trailer

Your trailer must display the same number plate as the car you’re towing it with. If you’re towing more than one trailer, the number plate must be fixed to the trailer at the back.

Letter spacing, size and style

The characters on a number plate need to be a certain height and size.

3.Getting number plates made up

You can only get a number plate made up from a registered number plate supplier.

The supplier will need to see original documents that:

• prove your name and address
• show you’re allowed to use the registration number

Identity documents

You can use the following to confirm your name and address:

• driving licence
• utility, Council Tax or rates bill from the last 6 months
• bank or building society statement from the last 6 months
• national identity card

The following will confirm your name only:

• passport – doesn’t have to be issued in the UK
• bank or building society debit or credit card
• police warrant card
• armed forces identity card

Proving you can use the registration number

You must bring one of the following to show you’re allowed to display the registration number:

• vehicle registration certificate (V5C or V5CNI)
• new keeper supplement (V5C/2 or V5C/2NI)
• certificate of entitlement (V750 or V750NI) to the number
• retention document (V778) – not applicable in Northern Ireland
• a renewal reminder for vehicle tax or SORN (V11 or V11NI)
• temporary registration certificate (V379 or V379NI)
• a number plate authorisation certificate (V948) with an official stamp from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) or Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)
• an electronic number plate authorisation certificate (eV948)
• a letter of authorisation from a fleet operator (including lease or hire company) quoting the document reference number from the registration certificate
• if your fleet is in the new V5C on demand scheme (also called V5C suppression), a PDF of the vehicle’s details from the view vehicle record service

Number plates (also known as licence plates) should show your vehicle registration number correctly. You can’t rearrange letters or numbers, or alter them so that they’re hard to read.

You could be fined up to £1,000 and your car will fail its MOT test if you drive with incorrectly displayed number plates.

The current vehicle registration number format was introduced in 2001. It consists of:

• 2 letters (these refer to the region in the country where your vehicle was first registered)
• 2 numbers (these tell you when it was issued)
• 3 letters chosen at random

You can get theft-resistant number plates – these make it harder for someone to remove them from your vehicle quickly and reuse them. Ask your local car dealer or registered number plate supplier for more information.
