What Will It Cost?
The sale price (also called the ‘Hammer Price’) is subject to VAT, the Auctioneer’s Buyer’s Premium of 8% (minimum £40 + VAT) together with the £80 Assignment Fee.
This can mount up! So be aware and use their calculator provided.
Example below, based on £10,000.00.
Hammer Price: £10,000.00
VAT on Hammer Price @ 20%: £2,000.00
Buyer’s Premium @ 8%: £800.00
VAT on Buyer’s Premium @ 20%: £160.00
Total VAT @ 20%: £2,160.00
Assignment Fee (not VATable): £80.00
Total Amount Payable: £13,040.00
The reverse is, you have a budget of £10,000.00
Maximum Budget: £10000.00
VAT on Hammer Price @ 20%: £1532.00
Buyer’s Premium @ 8%: £612.80
VAT on Buyer’s Premium @ 20%: £122.56
Total VAT @ 20%: £1,654.56
Assignment Fee (not VATable): £80.00
Total Additional Costs £2,347.36

If the person with the right to use the private number dies

The person in charge of the will (the executor) or person who has been left the number in the will (the beneficiary) can ask to either:
- give up the right to use the private number (you can apply for a refund)
- keep the private number, transfer it to another vehicle or put it in someone else’s name
Give up the right to use the private number
If the person has left you a V778 retention document or V750 certificate of entitlement then you can apply for a refund. You’ll need to tick either:
- section 5 on the V750
- section 4 on the V778
Send your completed form to DVLA.

Keep or transfer the private number
You’ll need to fill in the application to transfer or retain (V317) if you want to:
- keep the vehicle registration number
- give the number to someone else
- transfer the number to another vehicle
Send the form with the log book (V5C) to DVLA, along with a death certificate or one of the following:
- a copy of the probate
- a copy of the will
- a letter explaining that the previous nominee has died
- letters of administration
- a signed confirmation of executor or next of kin by a solicitor
There’s an £80 fee.
